The Inspiration for Caterina by Moonlight
I visited Florence, Italy, in October of 2019, just before the Covid plague hit the world...and I fell in love with the city and its history. At the Uffizi Gallery, the largest collection of renaissance paintings in the world, I noticed the point in time when faces went from stylized to specific, and wanted my characters to be the recognizable people in those paintings. Botticelli became an important supporting character. I based the novel on the history from 1465 to 1490 -- a period rich in drama! I spent the entire pandemic in the late 15th century, researching and writing, the characters channeling themselves through me, dictating their dialogue.
