"Students occupied the administration building and dropped flags with the initials F S M, for Free Speech Movement, from the three balcony windows on the upper floor...
in the plaza I recognized Joan Baez walking through the crowd to the Sproul Hall steps, and I followed her. Her long, straight, dark hair curtained her face as she tuned her guitar. I climbed on the steps behind her and, keeping her in the foreground, shot the steadily growing crowd. I don’t remember what she sang. I was too focused on what I was seeing: her beauty and intensity against the background of ever-expanding multitudes of protesters and observers. All of them hushed to listen to her voice, then joined in on familiar choruses."
